It is frequently performed at both amateur and professional levels, and has been adapted for opera, film, books, stage and screen. Often regarded as archetypal, the play tells of the dangers of the lust for power and the betrayal of friends.
For the plot Shakespeare drew loosely on historical accounts of King Macbeth of Scotland by Raphael Holinshed and the Scottish philosopher Hector Boece.There are many superstitions centered on the belief the play is somehow "cursed". Some actors will not mention the name of the play aloud, referring to it instead as "The Scottish play".

In contrast, Mats Ek’s witty and subversive Carmen draws on the story of the carefree gypsy who brings turmoil to the life of her lover Don José. Suggestions of the story are set to Rodion Shchedrin’s inventive distillation of Bizet’s tune-packed opera score, while the roles of Carmen, José and the mysterious ‘M’ give fine opportunities for strong character performances from Royal Ballet soloists.
The programme finishes with the first revival of Christopher Wheeldon’s pulsing, energetic DGV: Danse à grande vitesse, an immediate hit at its premiere in 2006. Michael Nyman’s music was written to celebrate the French high-speed train the TGV, and here the large number of dancers involved make the ballet a thrilling conclusion to the programme through sheer energy and the thrill of vibrant dance.

In David McVicar’s powerful and perceptive staging, the cruel and the beautiful collide in a corrupt society, at whose head is the womanizing and carefree young Duke of Mantua. Rigoletto, the deformed court jester at the Duke’s court, has to play a hard game to survive.
Ensnared in the web of court affairs, a curse placed on Rigoletto starts to exert its power when his own daughter is abducted for sexual pleasure by his master. Revenge seems to be the jester’s only solution, but through the unwitting actions of his trusting daughter fate turns a dark tale even darker by the tragic fall of the curtain.
The score is much loved for such tuneful and famous numbers as ‘La donna e mobile’ sung by the carefree Duke, the beautiful and virtuosic ‘Caro nome’ from the innocent Gilda, and a wonderful quartet that winds the voices together just as the strands of the plot pointedly entangle.
