The focus is on the migrant waders and we can do this tour between September and April. We travel to Farewell Spit as the tide is rising and spend time near the base of the Spit observing the birds flying in to roost as the tide chases them across the inter-tidal plain. The opportunity for this tour arises about one third of the time. We are restricted to a maximum of 10 people per trip.
The tidal range at Farewell Spit is huge - at low tide over 9km of sandflats sweep out to the clear blue waters of Golden Bay. This is where the arctic waders come to feed and you will be able to see many of them, though the number of species observed on many trips depends on tides, weather conditions and the time of year. Over the years we have studied the best times to see the bird life; the godwits, knots, turnstones and other arctic waders are usually on the Spit from late September until early April.

The Lighthouse Tour is approximately four and a half hours. You will be collected from the gate at the entrance to the nature reserve and enjoy the same experience on the spit as the Eco Tour.
On the Lighthouse Safari you will see a variety of resident seabirds and other wildlife (on some days seals haul themselves up for a snooze on the sand). There are plenty of stops along the way so make sure you bring your camera.
Learn how the Lighthouse worked - see the relics from this historic NZ icon and enjoy a muffin and tea or coffee while exploring our century old Lighthouse keeper's house.
We climb one of the Barchan sand-dunes for a panoramic view, which includes the vast intertidal plain where the migratory waders feed at low tide.
Our guides are passionate about the Spit and are commited to ensuring you get the most from your experience.
So join us, come smell the sea air, feel the breeze on your face and the sand between your toes!

There are approx. 5000 birds here and we can visit most of the time between September and April.
The Gannet Colony Tour travels beyond the Light house approx. 2 km, and you have a 20 minute walk across the flat sand on the spit's end to view the colony. You may get your feet wet here, as we stop to observe the gannets for 20 minutes. It is often a two way process - the gannets are very inquisitive and will fly low over us to get a better view. Enjoy a 20 minute walk back to the bus before the short ride to the lighthouse keepers cottage for refreshments. Explore the reserve and soak up the serenity. The last stop is to climb one of the huge dunes for a look into Golden bay and beyond. The Gannet Colony Tour is limited to 20 people per day so it is important to book in advance.
This spectacular sea bird usually chooses rocky outcrops as breeding and nesting sites. The Farewell Spit colony is the only one right at sea level, affording excellent views of the parent birds caring for their young. We have the only license granted by the Department of Conservation to visit this colony, which is New Zealand's newest nesting site for Gannets. To see them you walk beyond the Lighthouse (about 30 minutes) over the sand near the end of the Spit - you may get your feet wet.
Viewing Gannets is a two way process - the birds are known for their curiosity and often fly low over our visitors to get a closer look.

The tours which travel the length of the spit stop to climb one of the huge dunes and for refreshments at our lighthouse keepers cottage in the shadow of the lighthouse. Whilst on the Lighthouse reserve we have time to explore, soak up the atmosphere and see the lenses which were once in the top of the tower. There is also a pouwhenua placed by the local iwi to indicate their connection to the spit, and nearby a panel explaining some of their legends.
Muffins and hot drinks are included in the tour price and lunches can be provided for a small extra charge if we are on the Spit during the middle of the day. Our guides are passionate about the spit and are committed to ensuring that you get the most out of your experience. Join us, smell the sea air, feel the breeze on your face and the sand between your toes!
Farewell Spit's beauty is equalled by the gruelling nature of the driving conditions. Sand, salt and sea-spray take their toll - but with the RL Bedfords which are the mainstay of our fleet we have a vehicle which is both robust and comfortable.
The fleet is maintained to an exacting standard, refurbishment of the interiors is ongoing for passenger comfort and a hi-tech sound system ensures you won't miss a word of the commentary.
Open the windows, enjoy the sea breeze, sit back and experience!
Eco Tours
Farewell Spit has been a sanctuary since the 1930's and provides home for over 90 species of bird, most importantly the waders. Bar tailed godwits, knots, curlews, whimbrels and turnstones fly 12,000km every Northern Hemisphere autumn, to spend the summer in the south. See them from the wide windows of our stylishly comfortable Eco Bus.
Don't forget to bring - Camera, jacket, binoculars, and sunhat. (Refreshments are provided and meals can be arranged.)
Most people choose the Eco Tour which, as well as exploring the spit, stops in Puponga and at the most northern point on the South island, Cape Farewell. From the cliff top, seals and their pups can be seen all year basking on the rocks below.
The next stop is Fossil Point at the beginning of the Spit, a popular hauling out place for NZ fur seals. Old fossils expose themselves among the rocks and sea life abounds in rock pools nearby. 30 km along the ocean beach is the Lighthouse reserve, where we pause for 45 minutes or so to climb the lighthouse, check out the pouwhenua, learn some of the maori legends about the spit, have refreshments in our lighthouse keepers cottage and soak up some history.
Returning from the lighthouse, we climb a sandhill for panoramic views of the ocean beach, the parade of dunes along the centre of the spit and the inter-tidal plain where the migrant waders from the arctic circle feed during our spring summer and autumn.
Cape Farewell is the northernmost point of the South Island and the clifftop views nearby are spectacular. The coastal cliffs are sliced through with fault-lines, vertically walled slashes where streams run inland rather than to sea.
Our guides are passionate about the history and ecology of Farewell Spit, they are knowledgeable about the wildlife and committed to ensuring you get the most from your trip. Hear the history of Puponga and New Zealand's first Radar Station. See where Whales strand and uncover the mystery of the migrant waders.
During the summer there are up to 20,000 godwits and 30,000 knots at the Spit as well as other Northern migratory birds, New Zealand natives and introduced species. Bring cameras and binoculars to make the most of this nature-lover's paradise.
At the Farewell Spit Lighthouse there is time to explore around the historic buildings and enjoy the refreshments provided in the century old lighthouse keeper's residence. Along the beach you have stunning views of the Tasman coastline and the opportunity to climb the sand dune at Mullet Channel for panoramic views of the intertidal plain and a stop at Fossil Point, where fossilised shells and wormcasts emerge from blocks of mudstone cliffs.
Note - During our shorter daylight hours, it is sometimes not possible to have a trip.
Where no time is entered it is possible a shortened sand dune tour can be arranged.

History Alive today.....
Nobody would have believed in June 10 1886, that the serenity enjoyed by the inhabitants of Te Wairoa would be shattered by an outpouring of the Earth's fury. Few would have dreamed as the eighth wonder of the world - the fantastic Pink and White Terraces - sparkled in the moonlight, events deep in the ground were menacingly unfolding.
Te Wairoa Village, in a valley above Lake Tarawera, was established by a Christian Missionary in 1848. It was abandoned during the land wars of the 1860's, then repopulated a few years later as the staging post to the Pink and White Terraces.
Violent and unexpected, the eruption was New Zealand's greatest natural disaster. For more than four terrifying hours, rocks, ash and boiling hot mud bombarded the peaceful village. The fiery glow in the night sky and the thunderous roar of the explosions were seen and heard as far away as Auckland.
In the gloom of the day, the wreckage of the hotels and houses, and the burial of 5000 square miles of scenic countryside brought awe and dismay to rescuers.
The eruption destroyed the Terraces and buried Te Wairoa and two smaller villages under hot heavy ash and mud.
More than 150 lives were lost.

The best way to see the Bay of Islands is from the water, and the nicest way to see it is from on board a Tall Ship.
Day sails on board Northland's iconic tall ship the R.Tucker Thompson allow visitors to step back in time and explore the Bay of Islands as Captain Cook and others did.
An interactive experience where you can help sail the ship, by setting the sails and taking the helm, or simply relax and enjoy this beautiful part of New Zealand .
Often voted the best day of any holiday, those who step on board are transported back in time to the heroic days of sail.
The R.Tucker Thompson is spacious, with plenty of room on board to relax, read a book and soak up the sun (but don't forget your sunblock!). If you fancy something more energetic, then the crew will show you how to set the sails and you help sail the ship. If you really fancy adventure, then ride the bowsprit or climb the rigging, then swing off the rope for a lunch time swim.
At lunchtime, we'll find a sheltered cove and you can head ashore, have a swim or stay on board and have a drink. When you get back, we'll serve you a delicious BBQ lunch, tender barbequed chicken on a delicious salad and crusty french bread.
We have a licensed bar so you can enjoy a drink with your lunch before setting off for an afternoon sail. If you are musically inclined, feel free to strike a few chords on the ship's guitar.... we've even got a chess board if you fancy a game. Our friendly crew will make you feel at home and share tall tales with you about past voyages. Then kick back, and experience the awesome feeling as the wind fills the sails and we sail home.
